Pinewoods Inn (Mother Bear)
Grizzly Den Lounge
(Grizzly)
Manning Park Resort, Manning Provincial Park, BC (1994-1996)

The Pinewoods Inn was the first built project in a long term sustainable master plan program to provide Manning Park Resort's guests  with new green facilities with a distinct, cohesive identity. This 18,000 sf  guest services facility accommodates:  a 100 seat  restaurant, a 75 seat dining room, a 80 seat lounge, a 1,500 sf country store, a  bistro & outdoor eating area, and conference rooms on the lower level.

The overall intent of the project was to produce an indigenous, eco based building that is sympathetic to the natural setting and context, and sets the tone for future upgrading of the other existing facilities and new construction projects.

The design concept for Pinewoods Lodge is reminiscent of traditional mountain vernacular. Use of indigenous and durable materials including cedar siding, cedar decking, fir poles and exposed log beams, rock walls and earth based accent colours are important design elements. Artwork has been incorporated into the structural detailing with animals of the area highlighted to mark each building. Mother bear and cubs is a design metaphor for Pinewoods Inn. The lounge is named after the Grizzly which is common to the area.
