Creating A Climate of Change

I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy (Thomas Edison)
Buildings have an enormous impact on the environment. They occupy land; alter the ground, percolation of rainwater; interrupt wildlife patterns, and use multiple materials, labour, and fuel. They account for 35% of all energy expended worldwide, consume the majority of the world’s natural resources and make up most of the waste in our landfills.

The adverse effects of greenhouse gas, global pollution, the destruction by buildings of micro ecosystems and the rapid depletion of non-renewable energy sources are well documented. Oil production will peak in the next few years, with supplies running out a few decades later. In the meantime, gas and oil will continue to become more expensive. That is why building energy-efficient, environmentally balanced communities powered by alternative sources of energy (sun, earth, wind, water) makes sense. This is particularly important for rural and northern communities where the costs of energy are higher.

Years ago, Thomas Edison mused about the power of renewable energy. We are at the crossroad he unknowingly foretold. Green design professionals, in partnership with their clients, can lead the way to “tackle” the stewardship approach that is required – one that integrates ecologically based sustainable community planning, architecture and environmental design into all future developments.

Since our founding, Broadway Architects have worked closely with many communities to create designs and guidelines for environmentally responsive development. The Seabird Island Sustainable Community Demonstration Project, Manning Park Resort, NND new green community (Government House) and the Takhini Hot Spring Eco Village Resort Master Concept Plan are all projects that illustrate our continued dedication to sustainable development. At Broadway Architects, we are committed to working with our clients to create "living, restorative architecture".
